Why Convert OBJ to DAE?

OBJ is the universal mesh format. DAE is the architectural interchange format. Convert your models for SketchUp, Revit, and interactive 3D workflows.

Architectural Interchange

DAE is the native import format for SketchUp, Revit, ArchiCAD, and Vectorworks. Convert your OBJ models to DAE for BIM integration and architectural visualization.

Scene Structure

Unlike OBJ's flat mesh list, DAE preserves scene hierarchy, object transforms, cameras, and lights. Build structured 3D scenes from your mesh assets.

Open XML Format

COLLADA is a human-readable XML standard managed by Khronos Group. Edit DAE files in any text editor, automate with scripts, and integrate into custom pipelines.

Material Preservation

OBJ MTL materials are converted to COLLADA Phong material nodes. Colors, textures, and basic material properties transfer to DAE for consistent visual results.

About OBJ to DAE Conversion

Why convert OBJ to DAE?

OBJ (Wavefront) is the universal mesh format, simple, text-based, and supported everywhere. DAE (COLLADA Digital Asset Exchange) is the Khronos Group's open XML-based format designed for interactive 3D applications. While OBJ stores only flat geometry lists, DAE supports scene hierarchy, object transforms, cameras, lights, and rich material definitions. Converting OBJ to DAE prepares your mesh assets for architectural software, interactive visualizations, and scene-based workflows.

What is preserved during conversion?

Mesh geometry, UV coordinates, and vertex normals are fully preserved. Material definitions from MTL files (diffuse color, specular, texture references) are converted to COLLADA Phong/Blinn material nodes. Objects are organized into DAE visual scene nodes with identity transforms. Note that OBJ does not contain animation, camera, or light data. The resulting DAE will be a static scene focused on geometry and material interchange.

How to use the converted DAE file

DAE files import into SketchUp, Revit, ArchiCAD, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Unity, Unreal Engine, and any COLLADA-compatible application. For architectural projects, import into SketchUp for BIM integration. For interactive applications, COLLADA is supported by many WebGL frameworks and game engines.

How to Convert OBJ to DAE

Three steps to transform your OBJ mesh models into COLLADA DAE scene files.

1

Upload Your OBJ File

Drag and drop your .obj file (and optional .mtl + textures). Our engine auto-detects associated MTL material files. Free tier: up to 50MB per file.

2

Convert to DAE

Our cloud engine reads OBJ mesh data and MTL materials, then writes COLLADA XML output with visual scene nodes, mesh geometry libraries, and material/effect definitions.

3

Import & Use

Download your DAE file and import into SketchUp, Revit, Blender, or any COLLADA-compatible application. Files auto-delete within 1 hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

OBJ (Wavefront) is a simple text-based mesh format from the 1980s stores vertex/face/UV lists with MTL material references. DAE (COLLADA) is an XML-based scene format from 2004 supports hierarchy, transforms, cameras, lights, and Phong/Blinn materials. OBJ is the universal mesh format for editing; DAE is the interchange format for architectural and interactive 3D applications.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, 500MB files, and batch processing, upgrade to Pro.
Yes. Diffuse/specular/ambient colors, shininess, and texture file references from the MTL are converted to COLLADA Phong material nodes. Texture images are referenced by relative path in the DAE output keep them alongside the DAE for auto-material assignment.
DAE imports into SketchUp, Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Unity, Unreal Engine, Cinema 4D, and any COLLADA-compatible application. It's the standard interchange format for architectural visualization and BIM tools.
OBJ files don't have scene hierarchy they're flat lists of objects and materials. The DAE output organizes objects as visual scene nodes with identity transforms. Cameras and lights are not generated since OBJ doesn't contain them. The result is a clean, structured DAE scene ready for import.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and auto-deleted within 1 hour. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users: 50MB. Basic: 100MB. Pro: 500MB. Team: 1GB. Note that DAE XML is more verbose than OBJ the output file will typically be larger than the input.
