Why Convert DAE to OBJ?

COLLADA is a verbose XML format great for interchange but poor for performance. OBJ is the universal mesh format, compatible with every 3D tool on the planet.

Universal Compatibility

OBJ is readable by Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Cinema 4D, Houdini, Substance Painter, Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Cura, PrusaSlicer, and every other 3D tool.

Editable Text Format

Unlike DAE's complex XML, OBJ stores vertex/face data as clean text. Inspect, repair, or script OBJ files in any text editor. Perfect for automated asset pipelines.

Compact & Efficient

DAE files are bloated XML documents often 3-5x larger than equivalent OBJ files. Converting strips out COLLADA's XML overhead for efficient storage and transfer.

MTL Material Files

Your DAE material data is converted to companion MTL files referencing all texture images. OBJ+MTL pairs auto-assign materials when imported into any 3D software.

About DAE to OBJ Conversion

Why convert DAE to OBJ?

COLLADA (DAE) is an XML-based interchange format from 2004 widely used in architectural tools (SketchUp, Revit, ArchiCAD) and some DCC applications. While excellent for scene interchange, DAE's XML verbosity makes it slow to parse and large to store. OBJ (Wavefront) is the universal mesh format. A clean, text-based format read by every professional 3D tool, game engine, and 3D printer on the market. Converting DAE to OBJ strips away XML complexity and gives you a compact, universally compatible mesh file.

What is preserved during conversion?

Our converter extracts mesh geometry (vertices, faces), UV coordinates, and vertex normals from the COLLADA XML structure. Material definitions diffuse/emissive/specular colors and texture references are written to a companion MTL material file. Scene hierarchy is flattened into named objects. Note that COLLADA-specific features like animations, skinning data, physics, and complex node hierarchies are not preserved since OBJ is a static mesh format built for geometry interchange.

How to use the converted OBJ file

The OBJ+MTL output imports directly into Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, and any OBJ-compatible software. For game engines, you may want to convert further to FBX or glTF using our other converters. For 3D printing, the OBJ can be directly sliced in Cura, PrusaSlicer, or Bambu Studio.

How to Convert DAE to OBJ

Three simple steps to convert your COLLADA models to universal Wavefront OBJ format.

1

Upload Your DAE File

Drag and drop your .dae file onto the upload zone, or click to browse. COLLADA exports from SketchUp, Revit, Maya, or Blender are all supported. Free tier handles up to 50MB.

2

Convert to OBJ

Our cloud engine parses the COLLADA XML, extracts mesh geometry/UV/material data, and writes clean OBJ+MTL output. Materials are mapped from COLLADA's Phong model to basic diffuse/specular MTL definitions.

3

Download & Use Anywhere

Download your OBJ+MTL file pair and import into any 3D application, game engine, or 3D printing slicer. Files auto-delete from our servers within 1 hour for privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

COLLADA (DAE) is an XML-based interchange format from 2004 that stores geometry, materials, animations, cameras, and lights in verbose XML making it large and slow to parse. OBJ (Wavefront) is a compact, universal text format from the 1980s that stores geometry as simple vertex/face/UV lists with companion MTL material files. OBJ has no vertex limit and is supported by every 3D tool, game engine, and 3D printer ever made.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, file sizes up to 500MB, and batch processing, upgrade to Pro ($9.99/month). Team plans support files up to 1GB.
Yes. Our converter extracts COLLADA material definitions diffuse/emissive/specular colors, shininess, and texture file references and writes them to a companion MTL material file. The MTL references texture images by relative path. Keep your textures in the same folder as the OBJ+MTL and materials auto-assign on import into any 3D tool.
No. OBJ is a static mesh format that does not support animation, skeletal rigs, skinning data, morph targets, or physics. If your DAE file contains animations, convert to GLTF or FBX instead both preserve animation data. DAE to OBJ is designed for static mesh export for modeling, texturing, and 3D printing workflows.
OBJ files import into Blender, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Cinema 4D, Houdini, Modo, Substance Painter, Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Meshmixer, and virtually every other 3D tool. OBJ is the most universally supported 3D mesh format in existence.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and automatically deleted within 1 hour of upload. We never store, share, or inspect your 3D models beyond what's necessary for conversion. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users can upload DAE files up to 50MB. Basic subscribers get 100MB, Pro subscribers get 500MB, and Team subscribers get 1GB. DAE files from SketchUp and Revit can be large due to XML verbosity the output OBJ will be significantly smaller.
