Why Convert OBJ to FBX?

OBJ is the universal mesh format. FBX is the game dev industry standard. This is the #1 conversion on our platform for a reason.

Game Engine Ready

FBX is the preferred import format for Unreal Engine, Unity, and Godot. Convert your OBJ models to FBX for direct drag-and-drop game engine import.

Industry Standard

FBX is used by every major studio and tool. Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Blender, Cinema 4D, Houdini. Converting to FBX puts your models in the professional ecosystem.

Material Preservation

OBJ MTL material data: diffuse colors, specular, and texture references, is converted to FBX material slots. Your material assignments carry through to the game engine.

Transform Baking

Automatic scale normalization, up-axis detection and correction, and transform baking. Your FBX output is clean, centered, and correctly oriented every time.

About OBJ to FBX Conversion

What is the difference between OBJ and FBX?

OBJ (Wavefront) is the universal mesh format, a simple text-based format from the 1980s that stores vertex positions, UV coordinates, and normals with companion MTL material files. FBX (Filmbox) is Autodesk's proprietary binary format. The game development industry standard supporting animation, skeletal rigs, embedded textures, complex material networks, and multi-object scenes. OBJ is for modeling and editing; FBX is for production pipelines and game engines.

What is preserved during conversion?

Mesh topology, vertex positions, all UV map sets, and vertex normals are fully preserved. MTL material definitions: diffuse/specular colors and texture file references are converted to FBX material slots. Object names and grouping are maintained. Our converter applies automatic scale normalization: objects are centered at origin, grounded at Y=0, scanned for extreme scale values, and corrected for up-axis (Y-up for Unity/Unreal, Z-up detection for Blender/Max exports).

How to use the converted FBX file

The FBX file imports directly into Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Blender, Cinema 4D, Houdini, and most professional 3D applications and game engines. For Unreal, drag into the Content Browser. For Unity, drag into the Project window. Materials will auto-assign with their slot names intact.

How to Convert OBJ to FBX

Three simple steps to export your OBJ meshes to game-engine-ready FBX format.

1

Upload Your OBJ File

Drag and drop your .obj file (and optional .mtl + textures). Our engine auto-detects associated MTL files. Free tier: up to 50MB with 3 daily conversions.

2

Convert to FBX

Our cloud engine reads OBJ/MTL data, normalizes scale and orientation, converts materials to FBX slots, and writes optimized FBX binary output ready for game engines.

3

Import Into Your Game Engine

Download your FBX and drag into Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Maya, or Blender. Files are properly scaled, centered, and oriented. Auto-deleted within 1 hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

OBJ (Wavefront, 1980s) is a universal plain-text mesh format simple vertices/faces/UVs with MTL materials. FBX (Filmbox, Autodesk proprietary) is the industry standard for professional pipelines supports animation, skeletal rigs, embedded textures, complex PBR materials, and multi-object scenes. OBJ is for modeling and interchange; FBX is for production, game engines, and animation.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, file sizes up to 500MB, and batch processing of entire folders, upgrade to Pro ($9.99/month). Team plans support files up to 1GB.
Yes. Our conversion engine automatically normalizes every model: bakes object transforms, centers the model at origin, grounds it at Y=0, detects and corrects the up-axis (Y-up for glTF/Unity/Unreal, Z-up for Blender/Max exports), and rescales extreme outliers. Whether your OBJ came from Maya, Blender, 3ds Max, or Houdini, the FBX output will be clean and correctly oriented.
Yes. MTL material data diffuse colors, specular, and texture file references is parsed and converted to FBX material slots. Textures are referenced by relative path. For PBR materials, assign Metallic/Roughness shaders in your game engine after import OBJ doesn't support PBR, so materials arrive as basic color+texture assignments.
FBX is the primary import format for Unreal Engine 4/5, Unity, Godot, CryEngine, and Lumberyard. Drag your converted FBX into the Content Browser (Unreal) or Project window (Unity) for direct use. It also imports into Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Blender, Cinema 4D, and Houdini.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and automatically deleted within 1 hour. We never store, share, or inspect your 3D models beyond what's necessary for conversion. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users: 50MB. Basic: 100MB. Pro: 500MB. Team: 1GB. OBJ files with large texture sets can be sizable the FBX output will typically be more compact due to binary encoding.
