Supported: .usd, .usda files only

Why Convert USD to OBJ?

USD is the VFX pipeline format. OBJ is the universal mesh format. Extract clean geometry from complex scene compositions for editing anywhere.

DCC Compatibility

OBJ imports into Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Cinema 4D, Houdini, and every 3D tool. USD is a VFX-specialized format. OBJ brings it to every DCC application.

Scene Extraction

USD stages can contain dozens of referenced layers, variants, and overrides. Our converter flattens the composition and extracts the final resolved geometry.

Editable Geometry

USD stores scene graph references. OBJ stores plain geometry. Once converted, your models are ready for sculpting, retopology, UV mapping, and texturing.

VFX to Any Pipeline

Extract assets from USD-based VFX productions for use in game development, product visualization, 3D printing, and any non-USD pipeline.

About USD to OBJ Conversion

Why convert USD to OBJ?

USD (Universal Scene Description) is Pixar's powerful scene composition framework. It uses layers, references, variants, and overrides to build complex 3D scenes non-destructively. OBJ (Wavefront) is the universal static mesh format, simple vertex/face/UV lists read by every 3D tool ever made. Converting USD to OBJ extracts the final composed geometry from layer stacks and references into clean, editable meshes ready for any DCC application, game engine, or 3D printer.

What is preserved during conversion?

Mesh geometry (vertices, faces), UV coordinates, and vertex normals are extracted from the resolved USD stage. Object transforms are baked into geometry. USD composition arcs (references, payloads, inherits, specializes) are resolved. Material slot names and basic color properties from UsdPreviewSurface are written to MTL files. USD-specific features like variant sets, complex shading networks, and stage metadata are not preserved. OBJ is a static mesh format focused on pure geometry exchange.

How to use the converted OBJ file

Import the OBJ+MTL into Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Cinema 4D, Houdini, or any OBJ-compatible application. For sculpting and texturing, the OBJ provides clean mesh geometry. For rendering, assign materials in your target application. For further pipeline use, convert to FBX or glTF using our other converters.

How to Convert USD to OBJ

Three steps to extract editable OBJ meshes from your Pixar USD scene files.

1

Upload Your USD File

Drag and drop your .usd or .usda file from Maya, Houdini, Blender, Katana, or Omniverse. Free tier: up to 50MB per file.

2

Flatten & Extract Geometry

Our cloud engine resolves USD composition arcs, bakes transforms, extracts mesh/UV/normal data, and writes clean OBJ+MTL output with material slots.

3

Edit in Any 3D Tool

Download your OBJ+MTL and import into Blender, Maya, ZBrush, or any 3D application. Files auto-delete from our servers within 1 hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Upload your .usd or .usda file and click Convert to OBJ. Our engine resolves USD composition arcs (references, payloads), bakes transforms, and extracts mesh geometry with UVs and normals into clean OBJ+MTL output. The OBJ imports directly into Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, or any OBJ-compatible DCC tool for editing.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, 500MB files, and batch processing, upgrade to Pro.
USD composition arcs (references, payloads, inherits, specializes, variants) are resolved and flattened during conversion. The OBJ output contains the final composed geometry all layers are merged, variants use default selections, and overrides are applied. The result is a clean static mesh.
Basic color data from UsdPreviewSurface is written to MTL files. USD shading networks, MaterialX, and complex materials are simplified. For full material preservation, convert to glTF instead using our USD to GLTF converter, which maps UsdPreviewSurface to PBR metallic-roughness materials.
USD files are exported from Autodesk Maya (USD plugin), SideFX Houdini, Blender (USD add-on), Foundry Katana, Nvidia Omniverse, Cinema 4D, Pixar's Presto, and Apple's Reality Composer. It's the industry standard for VFX and animation scene interchange.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and auto-deleted within 1 hour. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users: 50MB. Basic: 100MB. Pro: 500MB. Team: 1GB. Complex USD scenes can be large the flattened OBJ includes only the composed geometry.
