Why Convert PLY to OBJ?

PLY captures the real world. OBJ lets you edit it. Convert scans into meshes ready for every 3D creative workflow.

Scanner Data Editing

Convert PLY from Artec, EinScan, Creaform, or photogrammetry into OBJ for editing in Blender, Maya, ZBrush, or 3ds Max. Clean, sculpt, and modify your captured data.

Retopology Ready

OBJ is the standard format for retopology tools. Import your scan OBJ into ZBrush, TopoGun, 3D-Coat, or Blender for manual or automatic retopology workflows.

Universal Compatibility

OBJ imports into every 3D tool. Your scan data becomes accessible to game engines, renderers, 3D printers, and the entire 3D ecosystem.

Texture Baking

OBJ+MTL preserves material slots and UVs. Bake PLY vertex colors into texture maps in your target application for PBR material workflows.

About PLY to OBJ Conversion

Why convert PLY to OBJ?

PLY (Stanford Polygon File Format) is the standard output format for 3D scanners, structured light systems, and photogrammetry software. While excellent for raw capture data, PLY is not a creative format — you can't model, sculpt, or texture in it. OBJ (Wavefront) is the universal static mesh format supported by every creative 3D tool. Converting PLY to OBJ transforms raw scan data into an editable asset ready for modeling, retopology, UV mapping, and material work.

What is preserved during conversion?

Mesh geometry (vertices and faces), vertex normals, and UV coordinates are fully preserved. PLY per-vertex colors are not directly supported in OBJ/MTL format. They are stored in a companion file for reference. Point cloud data (vertices without faces) is preserved but rendered as individual vertices in OBJ. The resulting OBJ+MTL is a clean static mesh ready for all creative workflows.

How to use the converted OBJ file

The OBJ imports into Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, and any OBJ-compatible application. For retopology: import into ZBrush with ZRemesher or Blender with RetopoFlow. For texturing: bake PLY vertex colors to texture maps, then assign PBR materials. For game assets: optimize the mesh with decimation, then convert to FBX or glTF.

How to Convert PLY to OBJ

Three steps to transform your 3D scan PLY data into editable OBJ meshes.

1

Upload Your PLY File

Drag and drop your .ply file from MeshLab, CloudCompare, or your 3D scanner. Both ASCII and binary PLY are supported. Free tier: up to 50MB.

2

Convert to OBJ

Our cloud engine reads PLY vertices/faces/normals/UVs and writes clean OBJ+MTL output. Point cloud data is preserved; mesh data maintains face connectivity.

3

Edit in Any 3D Tool

Download your OBJ and import into Blender, Maya, ZBrush, or any 3D application. Clean, retopologize, and texture. Files auto-delete within 1 hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

PLY (Stanford, 1994) is designed for 3D scanning stores point clouds, vertex colors, normals, and custom per-vertex properties in ASCII or binary. OBJ (Wavefront, 1980s) is the universal static mesh format for creative workflows — stores vertices, faces, UVs, and normals with MTL material files. PLY captures reality; OBJ enables creative editing. Converting bridges raw scan data into the entire 3D production ecosystem.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, 500MB files, and batch processing, upgrade to Pro.
OBJ does not natively support per-vertex colors this is a format limitation. Our converter stores vertex color data in a companion file for reference. To preserve colors in your workflow, bake vertex colors to a texture map in Blender or your target application after OBJ import, or use glTF/FBX which both support vertex colors natively.
PLY is the native output of Artec scanners (Eva, Leo, Spider), EinScan series, Creaform HandySCAN, FARO Focus, and most structured light and laser scanners. It's also the default export format of photogrammetry software like Agisoft Metashape, RealityCapture, Meshroom, and 3DF Zephyr.
After conversion: 1) Import OBJ into ZBrush for retopology (ZRemesher) and detail sculpting. 2) Bake vertex colors to textures in Blender for PBR material workflows. 3) Decimate the mesh for game engine performance. 4) UV unwrap and texture in Substance Painter. 5) Convert to FBX or glTF for final delivery. The OBJ is your creative starting point the raw scan is now an editable asset.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and auto-deleted within 1 hour. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users: 50MB. Basic: 100MB. Pro: 500MB. Team: 1GB. Scans can produce very dense files consider decimation before uploading for the free tier.
