Why Convert OBJ to PLY?

OBJ is the universal modeling format. PLY is the 3D scanning format. Convert your meshes for photogrammetry and point cloud pipelines.

3D Scanning Pipeline

PLY is the native format for MeshLab, CloudCompare, Agisoft Metashape, and RealityCapture. Convert OBJ to PLY for photogrammetry processing and scan alignment.

Vertex Color Support

PLY natively stores per-vertex RGB color data — essential for colored point clouds and textured scans. OBJ lacks this capability; PLY adds it.

Point Cloud Processing

PLY supports point-based geometry in addition to mesh faces. Convert your OBJ mesh to PLY for integration with LiDAR and structured light scan data.

Research & Academic

PLY is the standard format for computer vision, computational geometry, and robotics research. Convert OBJ assets to PLY for academic and research pipelines.

About OBJ to PLY Conversion

Why convert OBJ to PLY?

OBJ (Wavefront) is the universal mesh format, ideal for modeling, texturing, and general 3D work. PLY (Stanford Polygon File Format) was designed at Stanford University specifically for 3D scanning, photogrammetry, and point cloud applications. Converting OBJ to PLY enables per-vertex properties (colors, normals, quality values) that are essential for scan processing pipelines while maintaining full mesh topology fidelity.

What is preserved during conversion?

Mesh geometry (vertex positions, face indices), vertex normals, and UV coordinates are fully preserved. The PLY output uses ASCII or binary encoding with configurable property lists. MTL material data is not directly preserved since PLY stores per-vertex properties rather than material files, but vertex color data can be populated from MTL diffuse colors when available. The PLY format's flexibility allows custom per-vertex properties beyond what OBJ supports.

How to use the converted PLY file

PLY files import into MeshLab, CloudCompare, Agisoft Metashape, RealityCapture, Open3D, PCL (Point Cloud Library), and most 3D scanning and photogrammetry software. For point cloud processing, the PLY can be loaded directly into PCL or PDAL pipelines. For mesh editing, import back into Blender or convert to OBJ/FBX after scan processing.

How to Convert OBJ to PLY

Three steps to convert your OBJ mesh models to Stanford PLY format.

1

Upload Your OBJ File

Drag and drop your .obj file. Free tier: up to 50MB. Choose ASCII (human-readable) or binary (compact) PLY output format.

2

Convert to PLY

Our cloud engine reads OBJ vertices/faces/normals/UVs and writes Stanford PLY format with configurable per-vertex property lists and encoding.

3

Import into Scan Software

Download your PLY and import into MeshLab, CloudCompare, or photogrammetry software. Files auto-delete within 1 hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

OBJ is the universal mesh format with MTL material files ideal for modeling, texturing, and general 3D work. PLY (Stanford Polygon File Format, 1994) was designed for 3D scanning it supports per-vertex properties (color, normal, confidence), point clouds, and both ASCII and binary encoding. OBJ is for authoring; PLY is for capturing and processing real-world data.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, 500MB files, and batch processing, upgrade to Pro.
PLY is the native format for MeshLab, CloudCompare, Agisoft Metashape, RealityCapture, Open3D, PCL (Point Cloud Library), PDAL, and most photogrammetry and 3D scanning software. It's also supported by Blender (import), MATLAB, and ROS for robotics applications.
PLY does not use material files like OBJ's MTL format. Instead, it stores per-vertex properties our converter populates vertex color data from MTL diffuse colors where available. For texture-based materials, the texture data is not directly preserved in PLY but vertex colors provide a useful approximation for many scanning and processing workflows.
ASCII PLY is human-readable plain text ideal for debugging, scripting, and research. Binary PLY is 3-5x smaller and faster to parse ideal for large models, production pipelines, and automated processing. Both contain identical data; choose based on whether humans or machines will read your file.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and auto-deleted within 1 hour. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users: 50MB. Basic: 100MB. Pro: 500MB. Team: 1GB. ASCII PLY output will be larger than binary choose binary for large models.
