Why Convert IGES to STL?

IGES holds engineering precision. STL holds printable geometry. Convert legacy CAD surfaces into watertight meshes ready for fabrication.

CAD to 3D Print

Transform legacy IGES engineering models into STL files ready for FDM, SLA, and SLS 3D printing. Bridge decades-old CAD archives to modern fabrication.

Configurable Tolerance

Control chord height and angular deflection to balance mesh quality vs. file size. Fine tolerance for precision engineering parts, coarse for quick prototypes.

Watertight Output

Our tessellation engine produces manifold, watertight STL meshes. No holes, no flipped normals, no non-manifold edges, print-ready output every time.

Legacy CAD Recovery

Salvage IGES archives from CATIA V4, Pro/ENGINEER, and Unigraphics. Convert to STL for 3D printing replacement parts from legacy engineering documentation.

About IGES to STL Conversion

Why convert IGES to STL?

IGES is a legacy CAD format storing mathematical surface and solid definitions ,not printable triangles. STL (Stereolithography) is the universal 3D printing format that represents geometry as a simple triangle mesh. Converting IGES to STL tessellates NURBS surfaces into triangles that every 3D printer slicer can understand. This is the essential bridge between engineering CAD archives and physical fabrication.

What is preserved during conversion?

Geometric accuracy is controlled by chord height (maximum distance between the NURBS surface and mesh face) and angular deflection (maximum angle between adjacent faces). Tighter tolerances produce more polygons but better surface reproduction. The resulting STL is a watertight triangle mesh with correct face normals. IGES color/entity metadata is not preserved since STL is a geometry-only format it stores only triangles with no color, material, or meta information.

How to use the converted STL file

The STL file is ready for direct import into Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Simplify3D, or any 3D printing slicer. It can also be loaded into MeshLab, Blender, or Meshmixer for further mesh editing. Scale your model in the slicer to match the desired print dimensions, select your material and print settings, and slice.

How to Convert IGES to STL

Three steps to transform your legacy CAD IGES files into 3D-printable STL meshes.

1

Upload Your IGES File

Drag and drop your .iges or .igs file. IGES exports from CATIA, Pro/ENGINEER, SolidWorks, and legacy CAD systems are supported. Free tier: up to 50MB.

2

Tessellate to STL

Our cloud engine uses OpenCASCADE to tessellate IGES NURBS surfaces into triangles and writes watertight STL output. Adjust chord height and angular deflection for optimal print quality.

3

Download & Print

Download your STL file and import into Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, or any 3D printing slicer. Files auto-delete from our servers within 1 hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Upload your .iges or .igs file and click Convert to STL. Our engine tessellates the NURBS surfaces into a triangle mesh using OpenCASCADE. The resulting STL is watertight and ready for slicing in Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, or any 3D printing slicer. For best results, configure chord height and angular tolerance to balance surface quality with polygon count.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, 500MB files, and batch processing, upgrade to Pro.
For high-precision engineering parts: chord height 0.001mm, angular deflection 0.5°. For general prototyping: chord height 0.01mm, angular deflection 1°. For quick visual prototypes: chord height 0.1mm, angular deflection 5°. Tighter tolerances produce more triangles but preserve surface curvature better ideal for organic shapes and precision fits.
Yes. Our tessellation engine produces manifold, watertight meshes with consistent face normals. However, IGES files with open surfaces or modeling errors may produce non-watertight results. Always inspect the STL in your slicer's preview before printing. Use our Mesh Repair tool for any issues.
IGES (1979) is the first neutral CAD format it uses an 80-column punch-card text format and primarily stores surface geometry. STEP (ISO 10303, 1994) is the modern replacement it uses a more structured EXPRESS data model, stores parametric solid models with feature history, and handles assemblies better. STEP is the preferred format for modern CAD exchange. Both can be converted to STL.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and auto-deleted within 1 hour. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users: 50MB. Basic: 100MB. Pro: 500MB. Team: 1GB. IGES files are plain ASCII text and can be large for complex assemblies. The output STL file size depends on tessellation resolution tighter tolerance = larger file.
