Supported: .iges, .igs files

Why Convert IGES to OBJ?

IGES is a legacy CAD format from 1979. OBJ is the universal mesh format. Converting bridges decades-old engineering data into every modern 3D tool.

CAD to Mesh Conversion

IGES stores NURBS surfaces and solids, not polygons. Our converter tessellates these mathematical surfaces into clean triangle/quad meshes readable by every 3D application.

Legacy Data Recovery

Salvage decades-old IGES archives from CATIA V4, Pro/ENGINEER, and Unigraphics. Convert to OBJ for modern visualization, rendering, and archival preservation.

OpenCASCADE Tessellation

Powered by OpenCASCADE. The same geometry kernel used by FreeCAD, KiCad, and CATIA. Your NURBS surfaces tessellate with industrial-grade precision.

Universal Rendering

OBJ imports into Blender, Maya, Unity, Unreal, and every renderer. Convert IGES engineering models for photorealistic visualization, animation, and simulation.

About IGES to OBJ Conversion

Why convert IGES to OBJ?

IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification, ANSI Y14.26M) was created in 1979 as the first neutral CAD exchange format. While it served as the bridge between CATIA, Pro/ENGINEER, and Unigraphics for decades, IGES has been superseded by STEP (ISO 10303). Today's 3D tools primarily work with polygon mesh formats. Converting IGES to OBJ tessellates NURBS surfaces into triangle/quad meshes. Making legacy engineering data accessible in Blender, Maya, Unity, Unreal, and every modern visualization tool.

What is preserved during conversion?

Our converter uses OpenCASCADE to read IGES entity types (NURBS surfaces, trimmed surfaces, solids, shells) and tessellate them into polygon meshes. Geometric accuracy is controlled by configurable chord height and angular deflection parameters. The resulting OBJ preserves the tessellated mesh with proper face normals and UV coordinates for texturing. IGES color/entity metadata is not preserved since OBJ stores geometry only material assignment must be done in your target application.

How to use the converted OBJ file

The OBJ mesh imports into Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Cinema 4D, Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, and any OBJ-compatible tool. For engineering visualization, assign materials in your renderer. For 3D printing, the OBJ can be directly sliced or converted further to STL. The tessellation quality is production-grade suitable for rendering, simulation, and fabrication.

How to Convert IGES to OBJ

Three steps to transform your legacy CAD IGES files into modern polygon OBJ meshes.

1

Upload Your IGES File

Drag and drop your .iges or .igs file. IGES exports from CATIA, Pro/ENGINEER, SolidWorks, and legacy CAD systems are supported. Free tier: up to 50MB.

2

Tessellate to OBJ

Our cloud engine uses OpenCASCADE to parse IGES entities, tessellate NURBS surfaces into polygon meshes, and write clean OBJ output with proper normals and UVs.

3

Download & Use Anywhere

Download your OBJ mesh and import into any 3D application, game engine, or renderer. Files auto-delete from our servers within 1 hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) is the first neutral CAD exchange format, created in 1979 by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards. It stores NURBS surfaces, trimmed surfaces, solid models, wireframe geometry, and annotation data as a plain-text 80-column punch-card format. While superseded by STEP (ISO 10303), billions of IGES files exist in aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing archives.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, 500MB files, and batch processing, upgrade to Pro ($9.99/month).
Our converter uses OpenCASCADE's BRep tessellation engine to convert NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surfaces into triangle meshes. The tessellation quality is controlled by chord height (maximum distance between the NURBS surface and the mesh triangle) and angular deflection (maximum angle between adjacent mesh faces). Higher quality means more polygons but better surface fidelity.
Yes all NURBS-to-polygon conversions are inherently lossy since mathematical surfaces are being approximated by flat triangles. However, our tessellation engine produces high-quality meshes suitable for rendering, simulation, and 3D printing. The original IGES parametric data is not preserved in OBJ if you need to maintain parametric CAD data, convert to STEP or keep the original IGES file.
IGES exports are available from CATIA V4/V5, Pro/ENGINEER, SolidWorks, NX (Unigraphics), AutoCAD, Rhino, and virtually all legacy CAD systems. Most modern CAD tools can still export IGES for backward compatibility, though STEP is now the preferred neutral format.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and auto-deleted within 1 hour. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users: 50MB. Basic: 100MB. Pro: 500MB. Team: 1GB. IGES files are plain text and can be large for complex assemblies. The output OBJ mesh file size depends on tessellation resolution.
