Supported: .fbx files only

Why Convert FBX to STL?

FBX is the game dev standard. STL is the open interchange format. Converting bridges game-ready assets into architectural and CAD workflows.

Architectural Interchange

STL is the native import format for SketchUp, Revit, ArchiCAD, and Vectorworks. Convert game-ready FBX assets to STL for architectural visualization and BIM integration.

Open Standard Format

COLLADA is an open XML standard managed by Khronos Group. No vendor lock-in. Unlike proprietary FBX, STL files are human-readable and scriptable in any text editor.

Scene Preservation

STL preserves full scene structure: node hierarchy, transforms, cameras, lights, materials, and textures alongside geometry. Your FBX scene stays organized in STL.

Legacy Pipeline Compatibility

Many older CAD and BIM tools only accept STL. Convert modern FBX assets from Maya, Max, or Blender into STL for legacy pipeline integration and archival storage.

About FBX to STL Conversion

Why convert FBX to STL?

FBX (Filmbox) is Autodesk's proprietary interxchange format and the game dev industry standard for animation, rigging, and scene export. STL (COLLADA Digital Asset Exchange) is the Khronos Group's open XML-based alternative. Widely supported in architectural tools, CAD software, and web-based 3D viewers. Converting FBX to STL gives you an open, editable format while preserving scene structure, materials, and hierarchy.

What is preserved during conversion?

Mesh geometry, vertex positions, UV coordinates, normals, and scene hierarchy are fully preserved. Material definitions: diffuse colors, textures, and basic specular data are converted to COLLADA's Phong/Blinn material model. Transforms (position, rotation, scale) are maintained in the STL node tree. Skeletal animation and skinning data are preserved where possible, though complex FBX-specific animation features may be simplified in the COLLADA XML.

How to use the converted STL file

STL files import directly into SketchUp, Revit, ArchiCAD, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Unity, and Unreal Engine. For architectural projects, import into SketchUp or Revit for BIM integration. For web viewing, COLLADA is supported by many WebGL frameworks including three.js (via COLLADA2GLTF converter).

How to Convert FBX to STL

Three simple steps to convert your Autodesk FBX models to open COLLADA STL format.

1

Upload Your FBX File

Drag and drop your .fbx file or click to browse. Files from Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, Unity, Unreal, and all FBX-exporting tools are supported. Free users can convert files up to 50MB.

2

Convert to STL

Our cloud engine parses the FBX binary/serialized data, extracts mesh/UV/material/animation/scene data, and writes clean COLLADA XML output with all scene hierarchy preserved.

3

Download & Import

Download your STL file and import into SketchUp, Revit, Blender, or any COLLADA-compatible application. Files auto-delete from our servers within 1 hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

FBX (Filmbox) is Autodesk's proprietary binary format the game development industry standard for animation, rigging, materials, and scene export. It supports embedded textures and is the preferred import format for Unreal Engine, Unity, Maya, and 3ds Max. STL (COLLADA) is an open XML-based standard managed by Khronos Group. While slower to parse than FBX, STL is human-readable, editable in any text editor, and is the native import format for architectural tools like SketchUp and Revit.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, file sizes up to 500MB, and batch processing, upgrade to Pro. Team plans support files up to 1GB.
Yes, basic skeletal animation and skinning data are preserved in the STL output. However, complex FBX-specific animation features (custom properties, blend shape drivers, constraints) may be simplified. The COLLADA format uses a different animation model than FBX, so test your animated exports in the target application for best results.
STL files import into SketchUp, Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Unity, Unreal Engine, Cinema 4D, and many other 3D tools. It's the standard interchange format for architectural visualization and CAD pipelines.
Textures are referenced by file path in the STL output, not embedded (COLLADA supports both, but we use references for optimal file size). Keep your texture images in the same directory as the STL file, and they will auto-assign when imported into your target application.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and automatically deleted within 1 hour. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users can upload FBX files up to 50MB. Basic subscribers get 100MB, Pro subscribers get 500MB, and Team subscribers get 1GB. FBX files with embedded textures can be large the output STL will reference textures externally for smaller file size.
