Why Convert STEP to OBJ?

STEP stores engineering precision. OBJ stores renderable polygons. Convert parametric CAD solids into meshes ready for visualization.

CAD to Polygon Mesh

STEP stores NURBS surfaces and solids mathematically. Our converter tessellates them into polygon meshes readable by every 3D rendering and animation tool.

Tessellation Control

Configure chord height and angular deflection to balance visual quality vs polygon count. Fine tolerance for product renders, coarse for real-time engines.

Multi-CAD Support

Import STEP from SolidWorks, CATIA, Fusion 360, Siemens NX, FreeCAD, Onshape, Inventor, Creo, and any STEP-compatible CAD system.

Universal Export

OBJ imports into Blender, Maya, Unity, Unreal, ZBrush, and every 3D tool. Your CAD models become accessible to the entire creative 3D ecosystem.

About STEP to OBJ Conversion

Why convert STEP to OBJ?

STEP (STandard for the Exchange of Product data, ISO 10303) is the modern neutral CAD format. It stores parametric solids, NURBS surfaces, assembly structures, and product metadata using the EXPRESS data model. OBJ (Wavefront) is a polygon mesh format, storing tessellated triangles and quads with UVs and normals. STEP describes exact geometry mathematically; OBJ approximates it with polygons. Converting STEP to OBJ bridges the precision engineering world into the polygon-based creative ecosystem for rendering, animation, and real-time visualization.

What is preserved during conversion?

Our converter uses OpenCASCADE to tessellate STEP BRep solids and surfaces into polygon meshes. Geometric fidelity is controlled by chord height (maximum deviation from the NURBS surface) and angular deflection (maximum angle between adjacent faces). The resulting OBJ preserves the tessellated mesh with vertex normals and UV coordinates. STEP assembly structure is flattened. Each part becomes a named OBJ object. Colors and material assignments from STEP are not preserved since OBJ relies on external MTL files.

How to use the converted OBJ file

The OBJ imports into Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Houdini, Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, and any OBJ-compatible application. For high-quality product renders, use fine tessellation settings. For game engines, decimate the mesh further after conversion. For 3D printing, convert the OBJ to STL using our OBJ to STL converter.

How to Convert STEP to OBJ

Three steps to transform your parametric CAD STEP solids into polygon OBJ meshes.

1

Upload Your STEP File

Drag and drop your .step or .stp file from SolidWorks, CATIA, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, or any CAD system. Free tier: up to 50MB per file.

2

Tessellate to OBJ

Our cloud engine uses OpenCASCADE to read STEP BRep data and tessellate NURBS surfaces into polygon meshes with configurable chord height and angular deflection.

3

Import Into Any 3D Tool

Download your OBJ mesh and import into Blender, Maya, Unity, Unreal, or any 3D application. Files auto-delete from our servers within 1 hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

STEP (ISO 10303) is the modern CAD standard it stores parametric solids, NURBS surfaces, and assemblies using the EXPRESS data model. OBJ (Wavefront) is a polygon mesh format storing tessellated triangles with UVs and normals. STEP describes exact geometry mathematically (e.g., a perfectly smooth cylinder); OBJ approximates it with flat triangles (a faceted cylinder). Converting STEP to OBJ tessellates CAD precision into renderable polygons.
Yes. You can convert up to 3 files per day for free with files up to 50MB each. For unlimited conversions, 500MB files, and batch processing, upgrade to Pro.
Chord height is the maximum distance between the original NURBS surface and the tessellated mesh face smaller values = more polygons = smoother surfaces. Angular deflection is the maximum angle between adjacent mesh faces smaller values = smoother curves. Product renders: chord height 0.001mm, angular deflection 0.5°. Game engines: chord height 0.1mm, angular deflection 5°.
STEP exports are available from SolidWorks, CATIA, Fusion 360, Siemens NX, FreeCAD, Onshape, Autodesk Inventor, PTC Creo, Solid Edge, Rhino, and virtually every modern CAD system. STEP is the universal format for CAD data exchange every professional engineering tool can export it.
Yes all NURBS-to-polygon conversions are inherently lossy since smooth mathematical surfaces are being approximated by flat triangles. However, with fine tessellation settings, the visual difference is imperceptible for rendering and real-time applications. The original STEP parametric data is not preserved in OBJ keep the original STEP file for engineering accuracy.
Absolutely. All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Files are processed in isolated cloud environments and auto-deleted within 1 hour. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
Free users: 50MB. Basic: 100MB. Pro: 500MB. Team: 1GB. Complex assemblies can produce large STEP files the output OBJ size depends on tessellation resolution.
