Frequently Asked Questions

A polygon budget (also called a triangle budget) is the maximum number of triangles a scene can have while maintaining the target frame rate on a given platform. Exceeding it causes FPS drops, stuttering, or thermal throttling on mobile. The calculator shows recommended limits per platform based on industry standards and engine documentation.
Mobile main characters: 5K-15K triangles. Console (PS5/Xbox Series X): 50K-150K. High-end PC: 100K-300K. Characters are typically the highest-detail asset because they fill the screen. NPCs and enemies can use 40-60% of the main character's budget since they appear at distance or in groups.
VR renders two camera views per frame (stereo rendering) at higher frame rates (72-120 FPS vs 30-60 FPS). This effectively doubles to quadruples the rendering load. To maintain smooth performance and prevent motion sickness, VR budgets are significantly tighter 100K-500K total scene vs 1M-5M for desktop PC.
